IMFESS – Intelligent Methods for Earth System Sciences

CDS members associated with the project

IMfESS is a key profile area of the University of Cologne. It aims at a close connection between Earth System Sciences, related natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology), and computer science and mathematics. This interdisciplinary approach enables applications in astronomy, environmental sciences, the energy industry, and other fields.

The University of Cologne (UoC) has strong regional partners like the University of Bonn and Forschungszentrum Jülich. UoC established CESOC, the Center for Earth System Observation and Computational analysis, which links the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) with research in this interdisciplinary field. Further infrastructures will be developed, such as UoC's worldwide unique platform for geochronology. The further strengthening of competence centers within the Aachen–Bonn–Cologne/Jülich Geo cluster is pursued, such as the Isotope GeoScience Centre (IGSC4i) and the Cloud and Precipitation Exploration Laboratory (CPEX-LAB).
