Title: Research Software - Challenges, Pitfalls, Opportunities
Abstract: Do you write software for large, expensive HPC systems, but you feel unsure whether your code really works as expected? Everyone just wants to see your great scaling plot or solutions to grand challenges, but nobody really cares about the software you had to write to get there? In this talk, we will discuss challenges, pitfalls, and opportunities of research software, shedding light on modern research software engineering (RSE) techniques and their impact on computational science and engineering (CSE) software. We will give a brief history of RSE as well as an overview of current community structures and available resources. Is this going to be a numerics or CSE talk with lots of theorems, proofs, and great results? Absolutely not. Yet, with research software being an integral part of modern science, it is a talk about a key ingredient for obtaining these great results.
